    Data Visualization and Editorial Designer

     

     

     

    The Toronto Star’s award-winning Editorial Design team is adding another talented Data Visualization and Editorial Designer to design and develop compelling visual narratives and amazing interactive graphics.

     

    You are excited to provide enhanced visual storytelling and reporting for the web, as well as sourcing, cleaning, interpreting and presenting data. You will help with sourcing and are keenly passionate about using the best data tools available. You have a diverse background and bring a familiarity with various data formats and associated techniques such as access-to-information requests, scraping, graphics and mapping. You also have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of news reporting, including accuracy, fairness and issues involving privacy.

     

    The applicant should possess strong design skills and remain current with technology and digital storytelling methods and trends, with a particular focus on mobile presentation.

     

    You are able to successfully blend design, data and programming skills with a journalism sensibility!

     

    What You Will Do…

    • Designing news stories by leveraging a combination of typography, photos, videos and motion
    • Designing data visualizations and maps based on datasets and data analysis for tight deadlines
    • Familiarity with open-data portals and other sources of public data
    • Helping to build data visualization tools that can be used across the newsroom

     

    Why You Will Be Successful:

    • A university degree with minimum 2 years’ experience in data visualization
    • Strong conceptualization and visual communication abilities
    • Working knowledge of web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, APIs, etc.)
    • Experience with data visualizations libraries such as d3.js
    • Knowledge of mapping applications (Mapbox, Google Maps or Leaflet)
    • Expertise in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
    • Proficiency with UX, UI and social media
    • Work within tight deadlines for breaking news
