 12-month Contract

 

Our technology team operates two major Canadian news sites, TheStar.com and MetroNews.ca, serving millions of readers per month across multiple channels, including React HTML, Facebook Instant Articles, Google AMP, as well as Android and iOS applications. To grow and evolve the team, we’re looking for creative and hardworking front-end developers with a passion for problem solving in the challenging space of modern news media.

 

Responsibilities

  • Build fast, engaging and accessible web-based experiences
  • Write maintainable, performance-minded, cross-platform code
  • Coordinate with other teams to implement changes in a timely and collaborative manner
  • Help the team identify and anticipate bottlenecks in application code and propose improvements
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years experience developing production-ready code
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment
  • Strong understanding of JavaScript and latest web standards
  • Proficiency with browser developer tools and debugging techniques
  • Ability to assess risks, scope, and obstacles as they relate to front-end development
  • Explain functionality and decision-making behind a website or application that you've worked on
  • Experience with Git
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience in computer science, user experience, graphic arts, information architecture, or related field
  • Working knowledge of React/React Native and Node
  • Experience with build tooling (e.g. Grunt, Gulp, Bower, Yeoman, npm)
  • Experience with JIRA or similar issue tracking software

You don't have to have a degree in computer science or any degree at all. We’ll take smart over educated any day of the week. Someone with a sense of humour, a keen eye for detail, and the tenacity to have read this far. Someone who's willing to join our team full-time and do excellent work day-to-day at our offices at 1 Yonge, right next to the lake.
